In Arizona in the late 1800s, infamous outlaw

deliver him alive to the "3:10 to Yuma", a train that will take the
killer to trial. On the trail, Evans and Wade, each from very different

Journey From The Fall --

With its harrowing tale of a Vietnamese
family’s experiences following the fall of Saigon in 1975, JOURNEY FROM
THE FALL depicts a side of the Vietnam War that has seldom been
depicted on the screen. Foregoing much explanation of the country’s
political turmoil, director Ham Tran (who also wrote and edited)
instead chooses to dwell on the emotionally fertile ground of an
anti-communist family’s efforts to reunite and find freedom when their
homeland becomes uninhabitable. Imprisoned in a brutal communist
reeducation camp in 1981, Long must endure brutal beatings and
indescribable squalor at the hands of his abductors. Having made the
choice several years before to remain in Vietnam and fight, he urged
his wife, Mai; mother, Ba Noi; and young son, Lai, to attempt escape by
boat. The three endure a torturous journey by sea, finally arriving and
setting in Orange County, California. Unsure if she’ll ever see her
husband again, Mai begins a relationship with Nam, the captain who
brought her to the U.S. Meanwhile, Lai has difficulty adapting to
school, often getting into trouble. Fueled by a furtively received
packet of his son’s drawings, Long attempts to escape and find his
family.

The Tripper --

A bunch of hippies descend on a small woodsy
town for a concert, little realizing the terror that awaits them: an
axe wielding Ronald Reagan running amok in a one man war against drugs.
The sheriff tries to control the madness but a corrupt mayor and a
greedy promoter insist the free love festival must go on no matter how
high the body count. It's a scrappy little low-budget horror indie
given some star clout thanks to David Arquette in his directorial
debut. Jason Mewes is one of the more acid happy hippies. Lukas Haas
plays a doe eyed folk singer type who tries to stay relatively sober
since his uptight new girlfriend is already recovering from some
previous trauma.

Rated R for strong horror violence and gore, drug content, language and some sexuality/nudity.

The Kingdom --

A high intensity thriller about a team of elite
FBI agents sent to Saudi Arabia to solve a brutal mass murder and find
a killer before he strikes again. Out of their element and under heavy
fire, the team must join forces with their Saudi counterparts. As these
unlikely allies begin to unlock the secrets of the crime scene, the
team is led into a heart stopping, do or die confrontation.

Rated R for intense sequences of graphic brutal violence, and for language.

The Heartbreak Kid --

Single and indecisive, Eddie begins dating the
incredibly sexy and seemingly fabulous Lila. Upon the urging of his
father and best friend, Eddie proposes to her after only a week,
fearing this may be his last chance at love, marriage, and happiness.
However, while on their honeymoon in sunny Mexico, Lila reveals her
true beyond awful nature and Eddie meets Miranda, the woman he realizes
to be his actual soul mate. Eddie must keep his new, increasingly
horrid wife at bay as he attempts to woo the girl of his dreams.

The Host --

When a young girl is snatched away from her
father by a horrifying giant monster that emerges from the River Han to
wreak havoc on Seoul, her entire family sets out to locate the beast

Simpsons Movie --

The Springfield citizenry has every reason to
be out for Simpson blood. The calamity triggered by Homer has drawn the
attention of U.S. President Arnold Schwarzenegger and Environmental
Protection Agency head Russ Cargill. "You know sir," Cargill tells the
president, "when you made me head of the EPA, you were applauded for
appointing one of the most successful men in America to the least
successful agency in government. And why did I take the job? Because
I'm a rich man who wanted to give something back. Not the money, but
something." That "something" is a devil's plan to contain the disaster.
As the fates of Springfield and the world hang in the balance, Homer
embarks on a personal odyssey of redemption; seeking forgiveness from
Marge, the reunion of his splintered family, and the salvation of his
hometown.

Stardust --

Based on the best selling graphic novel by Neil
Gaiman and Charles Vess, takes audiences on an adventure that begins in
a village in England and ends up in places that exist in an imaginary
world. A young man named Tristan tries to win the heart of Victoria,
the beautiful but cold object of his desire, by going on a quest to
retrieve a fallen star. His journey takes him to a mysterious and
forbidden land beyond the walls of his village. On his odyssey, Tristan
finds the star, which has transformed into a striking girl named Yvaine.

Rated PG-13 for fantasy violence and some risqué humor.

Underdog --

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix--

Harry returns for his fifth year of study at

has returned. Fearing that Hogwarts' venerable Headmaster, Albus
Dumbledore, is lying about Voldemort's return in order to undermine his
power and take his job, the Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge,
appoints a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher to keep watch over
Dumbledore and the Hogwarts students. But Professor Dolores Umbridge's
Ministry approved course of defensive magic leaves the young wizards
woefully unprepared to defend themselves against the dark forces
threatening them and the entire wizarding community, so at the

When a detective delves into an investigation in a Buddhist temple he unearths some strange and surreal events.

The TV Set --

Go to any bar in Hollywood and you're sure to
find a hard done by writer who is drowning his or her sorrows after
being chewed up and spat out by the network television system. In THE
TV SET, Mike Klein seems set to join them. Klein's script for a TV show
called THE WEXLER CHRONICLES was inspired by his brother's suicide, and
is very close to his heart. After selling the script to PDN, who are
headed by a fearsome executive simply known as Lenny (Sigourney
Weaver), Klein watches as everything from the casting to the production
goes horribly wrong. Klein has one buddy at the network, a Brit named
Richard McCallister. McCallister's former position at the BBC leads
Klein to believe that some quality control will be exerted over his
project, and hopes McCallister will pull it out of the mire of
mundanity that PDN thrives on. But he's very, very wrong, and as
Klein's dream turns into dust; the show barely resembles anything he
wrote; his health takes a turn for the worse and he enters mid-life
crisis mode. Duchovny and Weaver are outstanding in their roles, adding
just the right balance of humor and anger to their characters.

The Nanny Diaries --

The story of the emotional and often humorous
journey of Annie Braddock, a young woman from a working class
neighborhood in New Jersey, struggling to understand her place in the
world. Fresh out of college, she gets tremendous pressure from her
nurse mother to find a respectable position in the business world
although Annie would prefer to trade in her blackberry for an
anthropologist's field diary. Through a serendipitous meeting, Annie
ends up in the elite and ritualistic culture of Manhattan's Upper East
Side; as remote from Annie's suburban New Jersey upbringing as life in
an Amazon tribal village. Choosing to duck out of real life, Annie
accepts the position as a nanny for a wealthy family, referred to as
simply "the X's." She quickly learns that life is not very rosy on the
other side of the tax bracket, as she must cater to the every whim of
Mrs. X and her precocious son Grayer, while attempting to avoid the
formidable Mr. X. Life becomes even more complicated when Annie falls
for a gorgeous Park Avenue Hottie, and she's forced to explore her
identity as never before.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End--

Superbad --

After facing the fact that they will be going
to different colleges next year, best friends Seth and Evan feel they
must first complete the right of passage of going to a high school
party and losing their virginity with the girls of their dreams.
However, with their less than stellar track record in the ladies
department, the two determine that they’ll have to get the girls drunk
to accomplish this feat. So they enlist their awkward friend Fogell to
get a fake ID, which he obtains under the name McLovin. Will they get
the booze to entice the girls and fulfill their plans, or will they
arrive at college with dashed dreams? Either way, they have a night
they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Shrek and Fiona are reluctantly reigning over

This hilarious mockumentary follows the rise and

and roll life filled with excess until his death in the 1970s. But as
everyone is singing his praises decades later, a new album from
Terrifico appears, and people begin to wonder if he's really dead.

The Reaping --

Mr. Bean's Holiday --

Mr. Bean, the nearly wordless misfit who seems
to be followed by a trail of pratfalls and hijinks, goes on holiday to

cinematic proportions. Tired of the dreary, wet London weather, Bean
packs up his suitcase and camcorder to head to Cannes for some sun on
the beach. But his trip doesn't go as smoothly as he had hoped when the
bumbling Bean falls face first into a series of mishaps and fortunate
coincidences, far fetched enough to make his own avant-garde film.
Wrongly thought to be both kidnapper and acclaimed filmmaker, he has
some serious explaining to do after wreaking havoc across the French
countryside and arriving at his vacation spot with a Romanian
filmmaker's precocious son and an aspiring actress in tow. Will Bean be
arrested by the gendarmes or end up winning the Palme d'Or?

desperate for the help of a local crime lord, the mysterious Ivan, but
Ivan's right hand man, the malicious Victor, merely toys with Walter
while coming down hard on Clyde, a plumber who owes Victor a lot of
dough. Victor is threatening to kill Clyde unless his brother, Darius
(Nick Cannon), a college basketball star, starts shaving points in
critical games. Meanwhile, Augie and Murph are getting into the loan
shark business themselves, not quite understanding how dangerous it can
be. Looking over all of this is Detective Brunner, a grizzled old cop
reminiscent of Captain Quinlan in Orson Welles's TOUCH OF EVIL.

to move beyond his troubled history. SNOW CAKE isn’t for those who need
an elaborate plot or explosions. Instead, it’s a rewarding drama for
adults that also features a great soundtrack from Broken Social Scene,
Feist, Super Furry Animals, and the Stereophonics.

Offside --

Many Iranian girls love soccer as much as their
countrymen and sport fans all over the world but, they are prevented by
law from attending live soccer matches in their country. Inspired by
the day when his own daughter was refused entry to a soccer stadium in
Iran, Jafar Panahi's OFFSIDE follows a day in the life of a group of
Iranian girls attempting to watch their team's World Cup qualifying
match against Bahrain at the stadium in Tehran.

A disparate group of girls, united only by
their desire to see their beloved team play live and in-person,
disguise themselves in myriad ways, risking arrest to try to get into
the game. The girls are either caught trying to get in or are spotted
in the crowd once they make it past the entry guards, and all are taken
to a holding area on the upper level of the stadium, where they are
tortured by being able to hear the roar of the crowd without being able
to see what is happening in the match.

The young women, who range from timid to
tomboy, are guarded by a group of naïve young soldiers who would rather
be watching the game themselves, out with their girlfriends or at home
looking after their sheep.

The soldiers and their prisoners are so close
in age, and the girls' crimes so harmless, that they have a hard time
maintaining their adversarial roles.

As they wait out the game, the young men
interact with and befriend the generally far more savvy women. One girl
is a tomboy from the city who taunts the guards about their country
ways. Another young woman relates the adventure that got her caught to
cheers from the other girls – she stole an officer's uniform to
disguise herself but, made the mistake of sitting in the wrong chair in
the VIP enclosure.

One young soldier, who is as much a fan as his
captives, is persuaded into shouting out the highlights of the game as
he watches through a gate. When he is scolded by a slightly superior
officer, his punishment is being forced to escort one of the girls to
the bathroom. Fearful of how the men in the stadium might react, he
punches out the eyes of a cardboard player's poster to make a mask for
his prisoner, so she won't offend any men on the way. One girl turns
out not to be a soccer fan at all but, has her own sentimental reasons
for wanting to be at the game in honor of a friend.

As the game nears it's end, the girls are
rounded up in a van to be transported to jail, along with another young
man who was caught setting off firecrackers in the stadium. The soldier
in charge is persuaded to turn on the radio so they can hear the final
moments of the game on the way and, when Iran defeats Bahrain to win
the qualifying match, the day ends happily for all. -- © Sony Pictures

The Valet --

The tale begins when François Pignon, a

Levasseur, the wealthy tycoon and his beautiful supermodel mistress
Elena. In a desperate attempt to avoid an ugly divorce with his wife
Christine, Pierre's scheming lawyer Maitre Foix concocts an outrageous
plan. By paying the valet a large sum of money to live with Pierre's
mistress, the two men hope to mislead the tabloids and most importantly
hide the affair from his wife. Meanwhile, the ruthless Pierre must
convince the stunning Elena to live with François in his cruddy
apartment until the dust settles. All the while, continuing to reassure
his wife that the other man in the photo, François, is really Elena's
boyfriend. Francis Veber's intricate and lively plot, tick tock timing
and variety of unusual characters make THE VALET a hilariously good

David Lynch, the creator of such mind bending

a motion picture, INLAND EMPIRE takes the basic structure of Lynch's
2001 masterpiece, MULHOLLAND DRIVE, and spins it even further out of
control. A blonde actress is preparing for her biggest role yet, but
when she finds herself falling for her co star, she realizes that her
life is beginning to mimic the fictional film that they're shooting.
Adding to her confusion is the revelation that the current film is a
remake of a doomed Polish production, 47, which was never finished due
to an unspeakable tragedy. And that's the only the beginning. Soon, a
seemingly endless onslaught of indescribably bizarre situations flashes
across the screen: a sitcom featuring humans in bunny suits, a parallel
story set in a wintry Poland, a houseful of dancing streetwalkers,
screwdrivers in stomachs, menacing Polish carnies, and much, much more.
By the time the film's electrifying closing credit sequence arrives,
even diehard Lynch fans will be gasping for air. What most glaringly
differentiates INLAND EMPIRE from Lynch's previous work is the format
on which it was shot. This is the first time that he has chosen to
shoot on digital video, as opposed to film, and while the decision is
jarring at first, the grainy imagery nonetheless casts a creepy,
haunting spell. Laura Dern's multi fractured performance is downright
heroic. She gives the film the human grounding that it so desperately
needs. Not for the fragile or timid, INLAND EMPIRE is a full blown
assault to the senses.

Funnyman Steve Carell is at his hilarious best
when his simple wish to change the world turns into a baffling request
from God and turns his seemingly perfect life upside down. With the
help of his family and a comical cast of animals, Evan's unbelievable
adventure leads to laugh out loud (LOL) hilarity.

David Lynch delivers his most avant garde,
abstract, and impenetrable vision yet. A three hour fever nightmare of
a motion picture, INLAND EMPIRE takes the basic structure of Lynch's
2001 masterpiece, MULHOLLAND DRIVE, and spins it even further out of
control. A blonde actress is preparing for her biggest role yet, but
when she finds herself falling for her co star, she realizes that her
life is beginning to mimic the fictional film that they're shooting.
Adding to her confusion is the revelation that the current film is a
remake of a doomed Polish production, 47, which was never finished due
to an unspeakable tragedy. And that's the only the beginning. Soon, a
seemingly endless onslaught of indescribably bizarre situations flashes
across the screen: a sitcom featuring humans in bunny suits, a parallel
story set in a wintry Poland, a houseful of dancing streetwalkers,
screwdrivers in stomachs, menacing Polish carnies, and much, much more.
By the time the film's electrifying closing credit sequence arrives,
even diehard Lynch fans will be gasping for air. What most glaringly
differentiates INLAND EMPIRE from Lynch's previous work is the format
on which it was shot. This is the first time that he has chosen to
shoot on digital video, as opposed to film, and while the decision is
jarring at first, the grainy imagery nonetheless casts a creepy,
haunting spell. Laura Dern's multi fractured performance is downright
heroic. She gives the film the human grounding that it so desperately
needs. Not for the fragile or timid, INLAND EMPIRE is a full-blown
assault to the senses.

Black Book--

Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven made his name in
Hollywood with films such as ROBOCOP, BASIC INSTINCT, and STARSHIP
TROOPERS. But Verhoeven got his start in the industry by making films
in his native country, and it's to Holland that he returns for BLACK
BOOK; his first Dutch film in 20 years. The story is set during the
final days of World War II in Holland, and follows a Jewish singer
named Rachel Stein. Rachel attempts to avoid the Nazis and remains in
quiet hiding until her family is brutally slain, causing her to join up
with a resistance movement. On a subsequent undercover mission, Rachel
crosses paths with a smitten German general named Ludwig Muntze, with
whom Rachel begins a relationship in order to feed vital information
back to her colleagues in the resistance. But as the action and
bloodshed escalate, Rachel realizes that she has genuine feelings for
Muntze, and soon she is in enormous danger. Verhoeven's film is wildly
ambitious and takes many intriguing twists and turns during its 145
minutes. BLACK BOOK commanded the largest budget of any film to be
produced in Holland, and it shows. Explosions litter the screen, plenty
of car chases ensue, and wince inducing injuries and deaths propel the
action. The director isn't afraid to criticize his fellow countrymen
and inserts a fascinating subtext about the actions of the resistance
fighters, asking some uncomfortable questions about the similarities
between their behavior and that of the Nazis. Van Houten lights up the
screen throughout and is surely destined for bigger things, and while
the tumultuous experiences her character undergoes might push the
boundaries of reality at times, Verhoeven has pointed out in interviews
that Rachel is a composite character who encompasses the merged
experiences of many real people from the era.

rooms in a run down motel, living in fear of her abusive, recently

and surveillance via the Stasi, a vast network of informers that at one
time numbered 200,000 out of a population of 17 million. Their goal is
to know everything about "the lives of others." Devoted Stasi officer
and expert interrogator Wiesler is given the job of collecting evidence
against the famous playwright Georg Dreyman. The job begins after
Lieutenant Colonel Anton Grubitz, a former classmate of Wiesler's who
now heads the Culture Department at the State Security, invites Wiesler
to accompany him to the premiere of the new play by Dreyman, also
attended by Minister Bruno Hempf. Minister Hempf tells Grubitz that he
has doubts about the successful playwright's loyalty to the SED, the
ruling Socialist Unity Party, and implies that he would approve of a
full scale surveillance operation. Grubitz, eager to boost his own
political future, entrusts the monitoring, or "Operative Procedure," to
Wiesler, who promises to oversee the case personally. Wiesler is also
convinced that Dreyman cannot possibly be as loyal to the Party as has
always been assumed.

benevolent guardian, instilling him with confidence, helping him woo
dreamgirl Angelica, and nurturing his artistic goals. But the
would-be artist and his benefactor soon clash over the content of the
film, and it takes a tragedy before Aldolpho can begin to understand

airport's peevish Passenger Relations Manager Oliver Porter, his lackey
assistant Zach Van Bourke and every airport security guard hot on their
trails, this group of UMs from cliques that don't mix learn to ditch
their differences and help each other flee the clutches of airport
authority. Meanwhile, Katherine and the other UMs have been herded to a
nearby hotel to wait out the storm. Determined to reunite with his
little sister and fulfill her unspoiled vision of Santa Claus arriving
on Christmas morning, Spencer enlists the help of his UM posse. Working
together as an unlikely family of their own, they outwit and outrun
Oliver and his crew. Plummeting through baggage chutes, rummaging
around unclaimed luggage and canoeing down a snow covered hill, they
turn Christmas at the airport into holiday pandemonium and, along the
way, prove that the holidays aren't about where you are, but who you're

An Unreasonable Man --

As quietly provocative as its thoughtful
protagonist, Steve Skrovan and Henriette Mantel's galvanizing
documentary which examines how one of the 20th century's most admired
and indefatigable social activists, Ralph Nader, became a pariah among
the same progressive circles he helped champion. Utilizing the standard
documentary formula of archival footage, talking-head interviews, and
the occasional computer animated graphic, the film deftly traces
Nader's life and career with a robust, lively pace that follows him
from his upbringing in a Lebanese immigrant family that took its
commitment to civic engagement very seriously (the family discussed
politics at the dinner table and attended town hall meetings together)
to his role as the leading consumer advocate of the 1960s and '70s
(when he took on the automobile industry and became responsible for
many safety features modern consumers take for granted, such as
seatbelts and airbags). But the film really picks up steam and takes
the form of an impassioned public debate when it tackles the
contentious 2000 and 2004 presidential runs that elicited accusations
of splitting the Democratic vote and enabling the election of George W.
Bush, making enemies of Nader's most ardent supporters (including
celebrity pundits Michael Moore and Bill Maher; liberal journalists
Eric Alterman and Todd Gitlin; and even former members of Nader's own
advocacy group, Nader’s
Raiders) while cementing the continued respect of fellow activists like
Mark Green and James Ridgeway. That all these figures appear on screen
alongside such disparate political luminaries as Phil Donahue, Pat
Buchanan, and Nader himself stands as a testament to the film's
balanced approach, one that makes a nonpartisan plea that such a
lifelong crusader for social justice not be remembered as a mere
"spoiler," but as a consummate public advocate and a living example of
the average citizen's power to participate in the democratic process.

Some time in the 1960's, in the heart of Africa,
a new animal was introduced into Lake Victoria as a little scientific
experiment. The Nile Perch, a voracious predator, extinguished almost
the entire stock of the native fish species. However, the new fish
multiplied so fast, that its white fillets are today exported all
around the world. Huge hulking ex Soviet cargo planes come daily to
collect the latest catch in exchange for their southbound cargo;
Kalashnikovs and ammunitions for the uncounted wars in the dark center
of the continent. This booming multinational industry of fish and
weapons has created an ungodly globalized alliance on the shores of the
world’s biggest
tropical lake: an army of local fishermen, World bank agents, homeless

Hot Fuzz --

Police officer Nicholas Angel is London’s

Rescue Me : FX

Rescue Me is a wake up call for every man who
dreamed about becoming a fireman and every woman who fantasized about
being with one. As flawed and complicated as they are selfless and
heroic, the fire fighters in this series are a compelling lot. They
deal with infidelity, drug addiction, and sexual abuse on a daily basis
and make it seem like old hat. But the characters are so well thought
out that they almost always make viewers care about what's developing
in their lives. This second season surpasses the debut year in terms of
story lines and pacing. Series creator Denis Leary reprises his role of
Tommy Gavin. Separated from his wife and children and also battling a
drinking addiction, Tommy is now working as the new guy in a Staten
Island firehouse. He isn't a hero so much as he's his own best victim.
Luckily, he's still got some loyal friends who're quick to nip his pity
parties short: "You feeling a little angry? You feeling a little hurt?
You feeling betrayed? Well, congratulations, you're feeling, and you're
feeling because you're sober." With his hangdog features and fast paced
speech pattern, Leary is surprisingly believable in the role. Returning
character Chief Reilly faces some struggles of his own, as he watches
his wife's spiral downward thanks to Alzheimer's. And it's not much
easier for Franco, who is trying to figure out the best ways to care
for his daughter while working an unpredictable schedule. While the
drama on this show can sometimes be fiery and intense, the series
provides enough biting humor to lend it an air of humanity and, at
times, even a little warmth. It doesn't leave viewers wanting to be
fire fighters, but rather empathizing with them.

Department of Defense researchers. The unlucky soldiers happen upon the
remains of their camp, and its denizens, and the horrors begin. The
inbred family of cannibals stalks the soldiers and picks them off, one
by one, in gruesome fashion.

Premonition --

This time bending thriller follows Linda Hanson,
a happy wife and mother, who loses her husband in a deadly car accident
one day, only to wake up the next morning and find him alive, laying
beside her in bed. Her initial reaction that his death was part of a
bad dream vanishes with the following day. In a surreal twist of fate,
Linda is slipping through time, experiencing the days before and after
her husband’s
death in alternating succession. When her husband is alive, she seems
to be an excessively paranoid wife anxious to prevent an accident she
feels is eminent; when her husband is dead, she is a grief stricken
widow desperate to turn back time.

staying, The Claremont, fate brings her together with a young writer,
Ludovic Meyer, after she has an accident outside his basement flat.
Eventually, Ludo ends up helping Mrs. Palfrey by playing a charade
pretending to be her grandson, so that the other off beat elderly
residents of the hotel believe that she hasn't been lying, and that she
really does have a grandson. The two newly found friends discover they
have a lot more in common with each other then they do with other
people their own age. Ludo inadvertently leads Mrs Palfrey through her
past; Mrs Palfrey inadvertently leads Ludo to his future. The young
writer finally finds the story he has been looking for all his young
life and Mrs Palfrey finds the 'grandson' she never knew she had. Thus
begins a deep rooted friendship that is far reaching, and everlasting.

The Last Mimzy --

Two kids find a bizarre box on the beach and
are soon exhibiting signs of off the chart genius in this gently mind
blowing fantasy film. Little Emma finds a cute bunny doll in the box,
who talks to her in electronic code, and Noah learns to speak in a
frequency that lets him control spiders. The kids learn to move objects
via psycho kinesis and communicate telepathically. Naturally, their
parents wonder what is going on here. Noah’s
science teacher has dreams predicting all this, centered on a mandala
symbol from ancient Tibetan Buddhism, which Noah draws in class.
Michael Clarke Duncan is suitably dour as the Homeland Security
official who investigates when the kids’
newfound power creates a major blackout across Seattle. Parents who
cringe at the vulgarity of many kid films will certainly appreciate
LAST MIMZY’s
sweet natured awe towards the natural world and its inhabitants, which
comes without extraneous action or excessive musical bombast. The film
moves with a poetic grace, calling attention to environmental and
social problems without preaching, and creating the possibility for a
genuinely better world. The child actors are real naturals who are
allowed to talk and sound like kids, and car chases and explosions are
all but absent in place of genuine mystery and excitement about human
potential. It's rare to find a sci-fi film that makes the future seem
worth saving, so consider this one a true gem.

The Secret Life of Words --

A factory worker who lives alone in a barren
apartment, wears a hearing aid, and keeps to herself with a rigorous
daily routine of identical meals, a fresh bar of soap every day, and
needlepoint work at night. While on an extended holiday in Northern
Ireland, she volunteers as a nurse, tending to a burn victim Josef
stationed on an oil rig. While Hanna coaxes him back to health, Josef,
who has suffered temporary blindness, reaches out to her urgently,
wanting to connect. As his brutish and passionate demeanor contrasts
sharply with Hanna’s
solemn and quiet manner, Hanna initially refuses to reveal anything
about herself, even her real name. But she soon she starts to recognize
parallels between her own isolation and that of the others on the oil
rig. She eventually grows to care for Josef and shares with him a
painfully severe secret from her past that opens wounds, and doors, for
the two strangers from different worlds to come together and help heal
one another.

The Tiger and the Snow --

Benigni is Attilio, a poet and professor at a
university in Rome who has recurring dreams in which he is to be
married to a beautiful and mysterious woman. After attending a lecture
by his friend, the visiting Iraqi poet Fuad, Attilio finally sees the
woman of his dreams in the form of Vittoria, a writer doing research
for a book on Fuad. Vittoria resists Attilio’s
fawning attempts to seduce her before returning to Iraq with Fuad,
where she suffers a head injury that leaves her unconscious in a bomb
damaged hospital. Fuad informs Attilio of her condition, prompting the
lovesick poet to join the Red Cross to gain entrance to war torn
Baghdad. Learning that the hospital is severely lacking in supplies,
Attilio makes his way through the equivalent of several circles of Hell
to find medicine for his dream woman encountering mine fields,
directionally challenged camels, and suspicious American soldiers.
Bizarre and bold, THE TIGER AND THE SNOW manages to once again showcase
Benigni as one of the world’s
most innovative comic talents. Dreamlike, yet still effectively using
moments of horror to convey a heartfelt antiwar message, the film also
finds plenty of space for his affably hyperactive presence.

Ladies in Lavender

Based on a short story by William J. Locke, two spinster sisters, Ursula and Janet, live in an old house by the sea in 1930s Cornwall, England. Their pleasant but uneventful routine of beach walks, reading, sewing, and tea time is interrupted when Andreas, a handsome young Polish violinist washes ashore, barely alive. The girls nurse him back to health and for the never married Ursula it's a case of first love far too late in life. She helps him overcome the language barrier, only to possibly lose him to a younger woman, the gorgeous visiting artist who recognizes his musical talent and is in a situation to help him. It's a simple story, though a perfect showcase for the mastery of Dench and Smith, two of the greatest thespians of all time. The director, Charles Dance, is a major British actor himself, thus his grasp of the myriad subtleties of the art is spot on here in his directorial debut. Period detail is also of key importance, and cinematographer Peter Biziou captures the invitingly homey yet windswept otherness of the locale and time. Music is also a key component here, and the violin passages attributed to Andreas are stunningly emotional.

Moral Orel Vol. 1

Part of the Adult Swim network's attempt at producing cartoons for mature audiences. This first volume of episodes from the show centers around young Orel, a God fearing boy whose attempts to follow the Bible often end in disaster. Luckily Orel believes that God is guiding him even when he descends into drug addiction, giving him a morally skewed look at the world that is as refreshing as it is funny.

Out in the desert, Johnny and his boys lose sight that the kid is a hostage who can't just be neatly returned. As the days tick by, the options of how to get themselves out of their situation start to disappear. Good times turn bad and bad turns worse as Johnny finds himself out of his league with no idea how to fix it; leading all these players toward a shocking conclusion they never saw coming.

These troubled lives eventually collide, causing each individual to take full responsibility for their not so responsible actions. A bitingly funny, and nakedly honest, critique of middle class dysfunction, with a cast as universally superb.

American Hardcore
Generally unheralded at the time, the early 1980s hardcore punk rock scene gave birth to much of the rock music and culture that followed. Hardcore was more than music; it was a social movement created by Reagan era misfit kids. Shut Up & Sing --

On stage at a 2003 London concert, Natalie Maines, lead singer of Texan trio the Dixie Chicks, spoke these 15 words to a small audience at the start of their sold out international tour: "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." The comment was delivered on the eve of the American invasion of Iraq, and drew cheers from the decidedly anti war and anti Bush British crowd. It was an off the cuff remark typical of the lead singer's temperament. Natalie, and fellow Dixie Chicks Martie Maguire and Emily Robison, thought little of it. But history and this film demonstrate that at this heightened moment of political polarization in the United States, many people did care, and empowered this simple, yet loaded remark to carry serious and longstanding ramifications. The documentary shows the band from their peak of popularity as the national anthem singing darlings of country music and top-selling female recording artists of all time, through the now infamous anti Bush comment, and on through the days, months and years of mayhem. The film also follows the lives and careers of the musicians through the writing and recording of their first album since "the incident;" and three years of political attack, making music, birthing babies, bonding, death threats, and laughter.

A meeting of Mildred Pierce and Arsenic and Old Lace, combined with the surrealistic naturalism of my fourth film, "¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto!!" ("What have I done to Deserve This?"), that is, Madrid and its lively working class neighborhoods, where the immigrants from the various Spanish provinces share dreams, lives and fortune with a multitude of ethnic groups and other races. At the heart of this social framework, three generations of women survive wind, fire and even death, thanks to goodness, audacity and a limitless vitality. They are Raimunda, who is married to an unemployed laborer and has a teenage daughter; Sole, her sister, who makes a living as a hairdresser; and the mother of both, who died in a fire along with her husband. This character appears first to her sister and then to Sole, although the people with whom she has some unresolved matters are Raimunda and her neighbor in the village, Agustina. VOLVER is not a surrealistic comedy although it may seem so at times. The living and the dead coexist without any discord, causing situations that are either hilarious or filled with a deep, genuine emotion. It's a film about the culture of death in my native La Mancha. The people there practice it with an admirable naturalness. The way in which the dead continue to be present in their lives, the richness and humanity of their rites mean that the dead never die. VOLVER destroys all the clichés about "black" Spain and offers a Spain that is as real as it is the opposite. A Spain that is white, spontaneous, funny, intrepid, supportive and fair.

The Good Shepherd --

Edward Wilson understands the value of secrecy, discretion and commitment to honor have been embedded in him since childhood. As an eager, optimistic student at Yale, he is recruited to join the secret society Skull and Bones, a brotherhood and breeding ground for future world leaders. Wilson's acute mind, spotless reputation and sincere belief in American values render him a prime candidate for a career in intelligence, and he is soon recruited to work for the OSS during WWII. As one of the covert founders of the CIA, working in the heart of an organization where duplicity is required and nothing is taken at face value, Edward's idealism is steadily eroded by a growing suspicious nature, reflective of a world settling into the long paranoia of the Cold War. As his methods are adopted as standard operating procedure, Wilson develops into one of the Agency's veteran operatives, all the while combating his KGB counterpart. However, his steely dedication to his country comes at an ever increasing price. Not even his wife Clover or his beloved son can divert Wilson from a path that will force him to sacrifice everything in pursuit of this job.

Everyone's Hero --

This heartwarming, wholesome family fare was originally conceived by the late Christopher Reeve and reflects a theme of perseverance against all odds from which the whole family can learn. Set in Depression era New York, the film follows 10 year old baseball fan Yankee Irving, who is more adept at remembering stats than he is at playing the game. Despondent over his sandlot misfires, Yankee is cheered when he makes the acquaintance of a baseball named Screwie who can actually talk. Later, Yankee visits his dad at the Yankee Stadium, where he is allowed to visit Babe Ruth's famous bat, Darlin'. The bat soon goes missing, Dad loses his job, and Yankee takes off for Chicago with a notion to deliver the bat to Babe. Along the way, he makes numerous friends, including a trio of down and out bums who take him under their wing, and a little girl with a mean pitch. The scene with the Detroit Tigers, where the team gives Yankee baseball pointers en route to Chicago, is the film's most charming, while the bumbling bad guy, Lefty Maginnis, provides an abundance of slapstick humor. Despite the dubiousness of Babe Ruth's appeal to contemporary youngsters, the story works by concerning itself more with family values, friendship, perseverance, and good clean fun, than with baseball per se. The standout cast also includes Brian Dennehy as the Babe, and Forest Whitaker as the Tigers player Yankee befriends. The soundtrack features original music by Brooks & Dunn, Wyclef Jean, and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Riding Alone For Thousands of Miles --

Ken Takakura gives a career redefining performance as an old fisherman. Estranged from his son for many years, Gou-ichi receives an unexpected call from his daughter in law, Rie , asking him to come to Tokyo to visit his son, Ken-ichi, who is in the hospital suffering from a stomach ailment. Gou-ichi decides to make the trip against his better judgment, but when he arrives, his son refuses to see him as he is still bearing the scars of the unspoken reasons why they were torn apart. Determined to reunite them, Rie gives Gou-ichi a videotape of an article Ken-ichi wrote about Li Jiamin, a Chinese folk opera master from Yunnan Province. Ken-ichi had promised Li that he would come back and film him performing "Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles," an opera based on one of the stories in the literary classic ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS; Gou-ichi makes it his mission to travel to southern China, find Li, and film the performance himself. With the help of tour guides Lingo, Jasmine and a fabulous interval with young Yang Yang, Gou-ichi takes off to the great unknown, trying to do right by the son who still appears to hate him. Takakura plays the old man with a quiet, dignified demeanor, moving slowly and barely speaking at all. Zhang Yimou directs the film simply and beautifully, allowing the fascinating characters and compelling story to develop at a natural, alluring pace. This very different kind of road picture is sincere and emotional, with a playful sense of humor. Be sure to bring plenty of hankies.

Since Otar Left --

The crumbling squalor of former USSR city Tibilisi, Georgia, is the setting for a tale of three generations of Soviet women. Elder matriarch Eka lives for the letters from her beloved son Otar, who fled to Paris years ago as an illegal immigrant. Her daughter Marina strains under the pressures of their miserable existence in the now "free" country where the electricity and water work only sporadically and the buildings seem as depressed as the people. She loves her mother, though, and when news arrives of Otar's sudden death she asks her own daughter to keep writing the letters so as not to break Eka's heart. The plot thickens when Eka decides to spend their life savings on three tickets to Paris so they can track down her beloved Otar. Director Julie Bertucelli previously worked as an assistant director to Krzystof Kieslowski and she has inherited his genius for lighting, composition, and ability to find beauty in the most squalid domestic settings. The excellent cast conveys much with minimal dialogue, making this register far more deeply than as a mere allegory of a country coming to terms with its past lies and failures. It won the 2003 Critic's Week Grand Prize at Cannes.

Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj

The legacy of
perpetual college party man Van Wilder lives on in NATIONAL LAMPOON’S
VAN WILDER THE RISE OF TAJ, as his former apprentice Taj Mahal
Badalandabad takes the torch to jolly old England, where he
is continuing his education at stuffy Camford University. At first
things look bleak for Taj, despite his gleaming newfound confidence and
hip makeover from his days at Coolidge College, as he is rejected by
the prestigious fraternity, Fox and Hounds, and ends up boarding with a
group of misfits. Driven to live up to his former mentor’s good name
and also to make his father proud, Taj sets out to prove his
big-man-on-campus potential by unabashedly leading his outcast house mates in an attempt to defeat the wealthy elite of Camford in a
range of competitions for the coveted Hastings Cup

Like its predecessor, the film is chock ful of vulgar humor and
sophomoric antics. Although Taj is the only character to appear from
the first VAN WILDER (with the exception of Wilder’s pet bulldog), many
of the plot points are predictably similar. Occasionally peeking
through the excessive sexual references, outrageous gags, and
cringe-worthy debauchery is a laugh out loud film that encourages the
underdog and thumbs its nose at the establishment. Much like the
grandfather of all college films, ANIMAL HOUSE (1978), VAN WILDER 2:
THE RISE OF TAJ examines the lighter side of higher education, pointing
out that its not only about earning a diploma but also about
discovering one’s potential and not forgetting to have fun along the
way.

Favela Rising

Jeff Zimbalist and
Matt Mochary's documentary is a major achievement in nonfiction
filmmaking, a vibrant, important work that is as inspiring as it is
tragic. The narrative centers on Anderson Sá, a distinguished-looking
young man who grew up in the worst of Rio di Janiero's infamously
violent favelas, Vigário Geral. Though most residents of this extremely
impoverished community do their best to cobble together a piecemeal
living, the neighborhood is ruled over by murderous drug lords, whose
average age of death is between 14 and 25 years old. In 1993, after one
of these men murdered a few notoriously corrupt cops, the military
police retaliated by brutally, and randomly, murdering 21 innocent
favela residents. One of these victims was Sá's younger brother. Rather
than allow the anger and despair to propel him into a place of darkness
and revenge, Sá decided to stop the cycle of violence, using the
universal language of music as his conduit to social awareness and
rebellion. Mobilizing like-minded friends and musicians, he started a
newsletter and a band to perform his upbeat, yet courageously honest
music, which featured lyrics about the massacre and police brutality.
The filmmakers track Sá’s project as it evolves from a small newsletter
to a bona fide national music, with childhood musical education being a
top priority. Beautifully shot, with visually stunning graphic elements added, FAVELA
RISING brings vibrance and color to one of the most downtrodden
settings on earth, imbuing its people with honor. The access the
filmmakers got to the residents, from regular families to masked men
with machine guns, is incredible. In the end though, it is the music
that is the real star of the show, which demonstrates the truly
remarkable power of song and rhythm to transform lives.

Director Randall Miller (CLASS ACT) neatly divides the story into three parts, providing flashbacks to flesh out Steve's story, showing Frank's desperate attempts--along with a paramedic team--to keep Steve alive, and illustrating what happens when Frank makes his way to the school. As the story pings back and forth, Frank arrives at the school intending to tell Lisa what happened to Steve, but fails to find her. What Frank does find, however, is Meredith (Marisa Tomei), a woman he hopes will fill in the aching gap left by the death of his wife. As Frank slowly falls in love with Meredith while continuing his search for Lisa, the film gently arcs through some sentimental material that should appeal to viewers who enjoy a good tearjerker.

Glasgow and Dover, director Gaby Dellal’s first feature takes off from
a true story of one man's determination to swim the English Channel.
The film deftly avoids the pitfalls of sentiment through a
self-deprecating humor that recalls THE FULL MONTY in tone and theme,
as well as a stunning performance from Peter Mullen (YOUNG ADAM) as
protagonist Frank Redmond.

After 40 years of working as a shipbuilder, the somewhat taciturn Frank
has been "made redundant" and let go from his job. He finds himself
utterly unmoored without the routine and trappings that have defined
his existence for so long, and suffers a loss of self-respect that he
is unable to talk about with his loving wife, Joan (Brenda Blethyn,
PRIDE & PREJUDICE), and son, Rob (Jamie Sives). Floundering, Frank
becomes obsessed with the idea of swimming the Channel, and undertakes
the project with the help of Chan (Benedict Wong, DIRTY PRETTY THINGS),
the owner of the local fish-and-chips shop, who becomes Frank’s
personal trainer. His three best mates (Billy Boyd, Sean McGinley, and
Ron Cook) sign on for the ride as well, each discovering new strength
in themselves along the way. But it is Frank’s relationships with his
family that are the most moving part of the film, as he deals with the
demons that have hounded him for over 20 years and rediscovers the
bonds he shares with his wife and his long-estranged son.

original, Sharon Stone resumes the role that first made her famous.
Beautiful American author Catherine Tramell (Stone) is living in London

Tramell likes to shock people with both her words and her actions. Dr.
Michael Glass (David Morrissey), who is evaluating her for trial at the
request of Det. Superintendent Roy Washburn (David Thewlis), is no
exception. Just coming out of a divorce and facing the resurrection of
an old situation that could ruin his career, Glass is slowly but surely
sucked into Tramell’s web when he takes her on as a private therapy
client. Day by day Glass realizes that she has infiltrated more of his
personal relationships, which also leads him to question why so many
people in his circle are suffering questionable fates.

Each time Glass is convinced that Tramell is guilty, she diverts
suspicion in another direction. Does gossip magazine writer Adam Towers
(Hugh Dancy) plan to reveal a deadly decision that Glass made in his
past? Is Det. Washburn really the upstanding cop he appears to be? Is
Glass's ex-wife, Denise (Indira Varma) trying to sabotage his career?
The twists and turns in the plot keep everyone guessing in this

Winter Passing
Adam Rapp makes his impressive feature film directorial debut with WINTER PASSING, an intimate, often bleak, but ultimately hopeful film about the importance of family, however dysfunctional. Zooey Deschanel carries the movie as Reese Holdin, a sullen, depressed, self-mutilating actress struggling to stay afloat in New York. When an aggressive editor (Amy Madigan) offers her a fat check in exchange for the love letters written by her famous writer parents, she returns to her father’s Michigan farm in search of a payday, but instead finds herself trying to connect with her estranged father (Ed Harris), as well as the odd surrogate family he’s assembled for himself.

Secuestro Express
After a decadent night of clubbing in the Venezuelan city of Caracas, Carla (Mia Maestro) and her fiancé, Martin (Jean Paul Leroux), are kidnapped by a trio of violent toughs, one of the legion of Latin American gangs who kidnap wealthy people in order to demand a high ransom. As they wait for Carla's doctor father (Ruben Blades) to produce the money, the thugs drive their victims across a nightmarish, nocturnal landscape of filthy landscapes and untrustworthy characters, beating them and threatening them with more extreme violence--especially when it appears that they just might get a reprieve.

recreates the legends of the Middle Ages; and Westworld, which
recreates the myth of the classic Western. Two Chicago businessmen,
Martin (Richard Benjamin) and Blane (James Brolin), spend their
vacation in Westworld, where they live out their fantasies of the Old
West mythology: chaotic barroom brawls, random love with beautiful
prostitutes, and a violent jailbreak during which they shoot the local
sheriff. But the complex technology that supports these fabricated
worlds develops complicated syndromes faster than the scientists behind
the scenes can resolve them. Soon the entire resort breaks down into
chaos, and the androids turn hostile on the visiting tourists.
WESTWORLD is both a retread on classic science fiction themes and a
precocious critique of the false values and artificiality of the
encroaching mass culture.

The Matador
Pierce Brosnan is outstanding as an international hit man falling apart at the seams in Richard Shepard's dark comedy THE MATADOR. Brosnan, riffing on his success playing the very well groomed and genteel James Bond and Remington Steele, stars as Julian Noble, a no-longer-noble hit man who spends his free time getting drunk and chasing impossibly young skirts. In Mexico he meets Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear), an average Joe trying to land an important business deal. Jealous of Danny's simple life, Julian becomes friends with the Denver suburbanite, who married his high school sweetheart, Bean (the very good Hope Davis), but lost his young son in a terrible accident. One day at a bullfight, Julian tells Danny what he does for a living, but Danny doesn't believe him--until Julian shows him an example of his expertise. But when Julian asks Danny to help him with his next assignment, Danny is dead-set against it, and ready to end their brief friendship. Little does he know that he has not seen the last of the rather unique hit man.

Stoned
Director/Producer Stephen Woolley’s STONED is a dramatic attempt--researched for 10 years--to accurately portray the controversial events surrounding the death of Rolling Stones founding member and guitarist Brian Jones at age 27, on July 2nd, 1969. To create his work, Woolley synthesized the written memoirs and testimonials of the witnesses who were there. Beginning a few months before Jones's death, the film focuses on a relationship he forged with Frank Thorogood (Paddy Constantine), a builder hired to fix up the rock star's home. Alone--save for his girlfriend Anna--and ostracized from his band-mates due to drug problems and legal tangles, Jones draws Thorogood in as a part-time friend and part-time assistant. When Jones is summarily fired from the band--only weeks before his demise--Thorogood is also let go, and becomes jealous and enraged. Deftly placed flashbacks throughout the film catalog Jones's ascent and--more gratuitously--his drug-filled self-destructive descent. Coupling these with the volatile relationship with Thorogood, the film discreetly shows the complex causes of Jones’s untimely death. To capture the spirit of the times, Woolley fills his soundtrack with 1960s nuggets, including excellent covers of Stones material by modern British acts like A Band of Bees and Little Barrie. He also shoots the flashbacks and recreated concert footage with a hand-held 16mm camera, achieving a real-life documentary feel. In this film, Brian Jones and his unfortunate end (strangely ruled "death by misadventure" at the time) are cast further into the mythical and legendary status they have achieved--and deserved.

The Libertine
An antidote to the sunny period pieces adopted from Jane Austen, which feature impeccably coiffed aristocracy engage in the witty banter of drawing room dramas and culminate in a most delightful denouement, THE LIBERTINE highlights the underbelly of the Britocracy of centuries past. Adapted from the play by Stephen Jeffreys, the plot follows the dastardly debauchery of the Earl of Rochester (a mischievous Johnny Depp). A hedonist who makes Oscar Wilde seem moralistic, the Earl spent his days and nights in beds, brothels, and bars, awakening from drunken blackouts only to stumble to the nearest whorehouse. Yet this ravishing rake was also possessed of a predilection for poetry, and turned his escapades into acid-tongued witticisms that pepper this frisky film.

Good Old Stuff

Super Troopers
Thorny, Rabbit, Mac and Foster are passable Vermont State Troopers. Stationed in the boonies on the Canadian border, they spend the bulk of their time playfully toying with speeders, stoned joyriders and taking impounded sports cars for spins on the open highway. When they're not on the road, they try to stay on the good side of their fatherly mentor, Captain O'Hagan, and avoid their tactless, thick-necked compatriot, Officer Rod Farva. All in all, they find their work to be pleasantly unchallenging.

The Passenger
Originally released in 1975, The Passenger is, on the simplest level, a suspense story about a man trying to escape his own life. This haunting film is a portrait of a drained journalist, played by Jack Nicholson, whose deliverance is an identity exchange with a dead man. The film was shot on location and takes Nicholson on an incredible journey through Africa, Spain, Germany and England.
As with all of Antonioni's work, however, there is another dimension. From beginning to end we are witnessing a probing study of the human condition. The protagonist's fate reflects each individual's own private thoughts about real and/or imagined destiny. The climax of the film, alone – a final sequence lasting seven minutes and taking eleven days to shoot is truly a synthesis of the movie and a tribute to the director's art. [DVD]

Mad Max (1979)
Futuristic tale set in Australia, which has become a wasteland where vicious, fast-driving criminals cause death, destruction, and mayhem on the highways. The police do their best to maintain control, but their attempts prove futile. As a result, one cop named Max quits his job and goes on a vacation with his family. However they are terrorized by a gang of malicious speed-demons, who kill Max' wife and baby. Angry, Max rejoins the force, revs up his motorcycle -- and seeks bloody revenge against the fiends who murdered his family. [VHS & DVD]

Dead Man's Walk (1996)
Also known as : "Larry McMurtry's Dead Man's Walk", "Lonesome Dove Prequel - Dead Man's Walk"
This miniseries prequel to Larry McMurtry's LONESOME DOVE and STREETS OF LAREDO westerns offers the first adventures for Gus and Call, the rough-and-tumble heroes of the previous works, as they try to carve out their own piece of the wild Texas frontier. Based on the novel by McMurtry, the video release contains over 45 minutes of footage not included in the televised broadcast. [VHS]

Thirty Seconds over Tokyo (1944)
Shortly after the bombing on Pearl Harbor, the American military began preparation for a retaliatory attack. The story of that mission is presented in THIRTY SECONDS OVER TOKYO, based on the memoirs of Captain Ted Lawson, who flew one of the 16 twin-engine bombers over Tokyo. Spencer Tracy plays Colonel Jimmy Doolittle, the leader of the mission, while VAN JOHNSON plays the leading role of Captain Ted Lawson, whose bomber also carries star Robert Mitchum. A variety of factors makes the mission exceptionally dangerous: Twin-engine bombers had never taken off from an aircraft carrier previously; the bombers needed to fly in low, pretending to be Japanese aircraft; and the oversize bombers couldn’t return to the aircraft carrier, so the intended landing site was behind enemy lines in China. With its almost documentary-style approach, THIRTY SECONDS OVER TOKYO is perhaps the finest film about World War II made during the war itself. [VHS]

Busted Knuckles Film Festival

Anyone who has attended the last couple of Big Sky Documentary Film Festivals probably saw “Stan Kann: The Happiest Man in the World”. The film is about an iconoclast entertainer who appeared dozens of times on “The Tonight Show” and other TV variety shows in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Among Stan’s varied interests are theater organs and a curious love of vacuum cleaners. But what really got me was the discussion of cars from the post-war era. Streamliners, Rockets, Viewing Domes and Fiiiiins Baby! Having a serious rust habit myself, I am fascinated by those who keep these old beasties on the road. Like Stan, I don’t think “every bolt original” is necessarily the path. If you can make it run (and stop) without going broke, I say more power to you. Of course, there are limits. A ’49 Ford probably is tall enough for a patio door…. Anyway, if you like this kind of thing, also check out “Yank Tanks”. And DO NOT miss seeing “The World’s Fastest Indian”! It’s “Field of Dreams” for motor heads.

Find Me Guilty
In respect to such work as SERPICO and DOG DAY AFTERNOON, the difference lies in the comedic, almost cartoonish aspect movie, which stars an astonishingly charming Vin Deisel as lifelong Mafioso Jackie DiNorscio. Perennially cheerful and always cracking wise, DiNorscio is a notorious criminal who is serving time on his most recent conviction for cocaine trafficking when the Feds bring him in to offer him a deal. They are mounting a massive case against New Jersey’s biggest mob family in what will eventually earn a World Record as the longest-running trial in history. The fiercely loyal DiNorscio, however, refuses to rat on his friends, and instead he finds himself standing trial along with them.

Why We Fight
Released as the American military continues to make its presence felt in Iraq and across the globe, Eugene Jarecki's (THE TRIALS OF HENRY KISSINGER) WHY WE FIGHT asks some pertinent questions about the economic necessities of war. Speaking to a number of key figures including Republican Senator John McCain and author Gore Vidal, as well as lesser-know names such as Wilton Sekzer--a Vietnam veteran and ex-New York City cop who lost his son in the World Trade Center attacks--Jarecki's film is a bipartisan treatise that was inspired by Dwight Eisenhower’s 1961 farewell address to the nation. Eisenhower spoke of a burgeoning American military-industrial complex, which he believed would threaten democracy across the globe. Jarecki takes a look at whether this has occurred by questioning his subjects on the links between big business and the military, while also talking to people whose lives are inexorably tied to the business of war. Fascinating revelations unfold, from Sekzer's attempt to pay tribute to his son to the thoughts of the fighter pilot who dropped the first bomb on Iraq at the dawn of the second Gulf War. Each of them gives their own unique take on the American military machine, while Jarecki intersperses their discussions with rapid-fire scenes of the machine as it lumbers into action.

Failure To Launch
Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker, SEX AND THE CITY) has a highly unusual job in this at times cartoonish romantic comedy: she’s an interventionist. What this means is that parents of young men who are still living at home well into adulthood can hire her to date their sons, which lends the often troubled men the fortitude to strike out on their own. Trip (Matthew McConaughey) seemingly fits this description perfectly; a 35-year-old extreme sports enthusiast and boat salesman, he uses his living situation to quickly end any relationship that becomes too serious. Trip’s doting mother (Kathy Bates) and quirky father (former quarterback Terry Bradshaw) hire Paula at their friends’ adamant recommendation, and she sets about her tried-and-true method of winning Trip over. A few obstacles emerge, however, as Trip’s buddy Ace (Justin Bartha) finds out the truth, and must be bribed by a date with Paula’s hilariously hostile roommate Kit (Zooey Deschanel). Paula also discovers a few things about Trip’s past that make her realize how different he is from the rest of her clients, but just as she begins to develop real feelings for him, disaster strikes.

Annapolis
When he won a coveted admission spot tothe Naval Academy at Annapolis, local kid Jake Huard (James Franco, "James Dean") thought all his dreams had come true - but his battle to become the man he wants to be is only just the beginning. Now, uncertain if a regular kid from a poor blue collar family can fit into the Academy's pressure-cooker atmosphere, and barely making the grade as a Freshman "plebe," Jake has one last shot at proving he has what it takes to become an officer in an institution that boasts a venerable 137-year history of focused discipline and determined excellence. With nothing left to lose, Jake decides to enter the notoriously fierce Navy boxing competition known as the Brigade Championships -- and face off against his arch-nemesis, Midshipman Lt. Cole (TYRESE GIBSON). Everything Jake has ever hoped for stands in the balance: the chance to make his father proud, to validate his Lieutenant's faith in him, to stand up for his fellow plebes, and most of all, to forge a different future.

Imagine Me & You
A mainstream romantic-comedy with a twist, Ol Parker's IMAGINE ME & YOU stands out from the generic pack thanks to its gay-themed subject matter. The movie is as light and fluffy as the average movie in the genre, but as viewers scoop a mouthful of popcorn they may find their expectations subtly altered. Set in London, the movie begins with the wedding of Rachel (Piper Perabo) and Heck (Matthew Goode). Although they seem blissfully happy, Rachel is masking some Sapphic thoughts after eyeing Luce, the wedding florist (Lena Headey), during the ceremony. As luck would have it, one of Heck's male friends, Cooper (Darren Boyd), has fallen for Luce, allowing her and Rachel to meet socially and to consider consummating their desire for one another.

Cache (French) : AKA: "Cache", "Hidden"
Writer/director Michael Haneke delivers a masterpiece of unsettlement with CACHÉ. Life seems perfect for Georges (Daniel Auteuil) and Anne (Juliette Binoche), a bourgeois Parisian couple who live in a comfortable home with their adolescent son, Pierrot (Lester Makedonsky). But when an anonymous videotape turns up on their doorstep, showing their house under surveillance from across the street, their calm life begins to spiral out of control. Subsequent videotapes arrive, accompanied by mysterious drawings, and gradually Georges becomes convinced that he's being tormented by a figure from his past. But when he confronts him, the man assures Georges he is innocent. A growing sense of guilt begins to rise in Georges as he recalls his less-than-angelic childhood, yet for some reason he's unable to be completely honest with Anne. Soon, their happy home is an emotional battleground, leading to a climax that is breathtaking in its ferocity and ambiguousness.

UltraViolet
Although the artwork in the opening credits would lead you to believe otherwise, writer/director Kurt Wimmer (EQUILIBRIUM) reportedly based ULTRAVIOLET not on a comic book but on John Cassavetes's 1980 film GLORIA, in which a woman must protect a young boy who is carrying some information sought by the Mafia. In ULTRAVIOLET's mid-21st century, a virus has turned part of the earth's population into "hemophages," vampire-like creatures with heightened speed and dexterity, and a fascist government is intent on stamping them out. Enter Violet (Milla Jovovich), a hemophage determined to fight for her people. Her battle takes an unexpected turn, however, when she finds herself protecting Six (Cameron Bright), a mysterious young child who was raised in a lab.

Leroy & Stitch
The feature-length conclusion of the LILO & STITCH: THE SERIES television show, and follows the further adventures of the genetically engineered alien Stitch and his human friend, the young Hawaiian girl Lilo. In this film the two must face an alien experiment gone awry in the shape of a creature that resembles a demonic bunny.

Crystal Video is interested in commissioning a mural or series of murals to be created in a temporary medium on the subject of film. The space to be used is our tall interior walls which are of very old plaster. The mural(s) will have to be erasable or re-paintable without damaging the underlying plaster. We envision scenes from classic movies (new or old) , or flights of fancy that are movie-inspired. This is an opportunity to make very little money while gaining exposure to a very large crowd. La LLorona

Then UCLA geologist Davis McLaren arrives at the camp with plans for a risky expedition: treacherous ice fields make his target destination accessible only by dog sled so late in the season. Soon Shepard, McLaren and the sled dogs are on their way in search of McLaren’s prize: a meteorite from Mercury. Unfortunately a storm forces them to return early and abandon camp but there is only enough room on the rescue plane for the people, not the dogs so they must make a trip back to save them.

Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada

The journey to Mexico begins when Pete Perkins (Jones) uncovers the identity of a Border Patrolman, Mike Norton (Barry Pepper), who has shot and killed his best friend, Melquiades Estrada (Julio Cedillo). Kidnapping Norton and forcing him to dig up Estrada's body, Perkins straps the corpse to a horse, and informs Norton that he will be traveling with them to Mexico. Once there, they will bury Estrada according to instructions he gave Perkins prior to his death.

Underworld Evolution

Bloodthirsty vengeance is measured out in buckets, not spoonfuls for this hard-hitting vampire movie sequel. The story picks up right where the first UNDERWORLD left off, in the midst of a war between Lycans (werewolves) and vampires, with the gorgeous death-dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale), on the run with her vamp-wolf hybrid lover, Michael (Scott Speedman). This go-'round, there are flashbacks to three centuries earlier and the separation of two ultra-bad brothers, one vampire and one Lycan.

The Big White

A struggling travel agent eking out a living in Alaska thinks all his financial troubles can be solved when he finds a frozen body in a dumpster. Could a dead body, a missing brother and a fat insurance policy help raise the money to treat his wife's Tourette's Syndrome? Money, murder and mayhem are the name of the game in this 'white' comedy set in the great outdoors.

Firewall

Jack Stanfield (Harrison Ford) is an average family man in Seattle who heads up the hi-tech security team at his local bank. But following a seemingly trivial case of identity theft, Jack's life is turned upside-down when he discovers that his wife (Virginia Madsen) and two kids have been kidnapped. The ransom is $100 million, which the kidnappers, led by Bill Cox (Paul Bettany), want Jack to obtain for them via his expert computer skills. Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
A hothouse full of laughs starring Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, and Vincent Gardenia. With special appearances by James Belushi, John Candy, Christopher Guest and Bill Murray will bring a smile well worth 50 cents. Based on the Roger Corman cult classic, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS slams together twisted humor, a singing plant, a sadistic dentist, and sweet and oblivious love between two skid-row denizens into a rollicking musical well worth watching again and again. Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene portray perfectly clumsy Seymour and bubbly but easily dominated Audrey as they search for a way off skid row. A strange and unusual plant Seymour found after an eclipse might be their ticket out, but the plant Seymour calls Audrey II also desires a strange and unusual food: blood. Audrey’s abusive boyfriend, Orin, a dentist who enjoys inflicting pain (played to the hilt by Steve Martin), is the first to go, but who will be next? And will Audrey It's hunger ever end?

Seven Brides For Seven Brothers (1954)
In the Oregon Territory, mountain man Adam Pontipee (Howard Keel, acting and singing with gusto) comes to town to sell his crops and woo a woman to be his wife, succeeding with spirited Milly (Jane Powell), who is tired of feeding and waiting on so many men at the local inn. Her dreams of keeping house for just one man are shattered when she discovers that Adam shares his pigsty cabin with six brawling brothers. Milly’s good cooking and stubborn nature whip the young men into shape and inspire them to seek women of their own. But after a disastrous barn raising during which the brothers snare the attention of the town girls only to be taunted into fighting with the town men, Adam suggests his brothers forget gentle methods of love and follow the actions of the Roman with the Sabine ("Sobbin'") women. The kidnapping of their six sweethearts spurs Milly to throw the men out of the house, but enforced proximity caused by winter and the brothers’ good intentions just might help love bloom again.
[It hit a 79 on the tomatometer so at least you know that someone liked it]

Thelonious Monk Straight No Chaser (1989)
A great documentary including extensive footage modern jazz pianist/composer Thelonious Monk, including off stage footage is a must see for any jazz fan. Much of the film is centered around the six months of footage cinematographer Christian Blackwood shot of Monk in 1967-68. The footage reveals a lot about Monk's personality, including his dramatic mood swings, his eccentric behavior, as well as his sense of humor. The footage also shows Monk "behind the scenes" in the studio and on tour in Europe. Interviews, photos and many of Monk's songs round out this biography.

The Essential Clash (2003)
This collection gathers together all the promotional videos from The Clash, as well as interview footage and rare archival material. A short film (HELL W10) directed by the late Joe Strummer is also included; Filmed in 1983 this silent flick has been lost for almost 20 years, and is only included here due to it turning up at a flea market! Meanwhile, see why The Clash were one of the most influential bands to come out of the English punk rock movement, with videos that include "White Riot," "Rock The Casbah," "London Calling," and many more..

Rigoletto (2005)
Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece Rigoletto is brilliantly brought to life in this unique production of the beloved opera, performed under the stars of Siena, Italy, by Roberto Servile, Inva Mula, Marcelo Alverez, and the Toscanini Foundation Orchestra.

Transamerica
Felicity Huffman leaves the glamor of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES behind and makes a surprising diversion with this offbeat film. Playing an uptight male-to-female transsexual named Sabrina "Bree" Osbourne (née Stanley), Huffman gives a remarkable performance. Readying herself for the final snip that will make her womanly transformation complete, Bree's life takes a sudden turn when she receives a phone call from New York. Her son, Toby (Kevin Zegers), has been jailed, and Bree needs to post bail for him. The only problem is, Bree didn't know she had a son, but her therapist refuses to give her written permission to have the final part of her sex-change operation if she doesn't go, so Bree heads east from her California home. Thinking Bree is a Christian missionary, gay hustler Toby informs her of his intention to becom a porn star on the west coast, which brings out plenty of motherly instincts in the worried cross-gender father. So the two take a road trip back west, with Bree flailing in her attempts to tell Toby the truths about who she is and what she once was.

This time, all twelve Baker kids and their parents, Tom (Martin) and Kate (Bonnie Hunt), are going on vacation, returning to their summer cabin in Wisconsin for one last hurrah before the kids grow up and go their separate ways. Lorraine (Hilary Duff) is on her way to New York to begin an internship with VOGUE, Nora (Piper Perabo) is hugely pregnant, and the Bakers want to spend some quality time all together for a change.

Bloodrayne
This action-horror film is set in ancient Romania and stars Kristianna Loken (TERMINATOR 3) as Rayne, a half-human/half-vampire sworn to kill her evil tyrant vampire father (Ben Kingsley). Michael Madsen, Michelle Rodriguez, and Matthew Davis play a trio of vampire hunters who ally themselves with Rayne. Based on a video game, this film earns its R-rating by offering a lot more blood, gore, and nudity--and less CGI effects--than most of its modern vamp contemporaries. With all its swords, chained breasts, gushing arteries, and severed heads, BLOODRAYNE seems more like a welcome throwback to those great early 1980s drive-in sword and sorcery flicks.

Tori’s favorites

Harold and Maude:
Stars Ruth Gordon and Bud court, directed by Hal Ashby with an incredible soundtrack provided solely by Cat Stevens. It is a classic cult film which once seen, is an immediate favorite of everyone, regardless of age.
After I first watched this film, it wouldn’t leave my mind. Every time I re-watch it, the feeling of hope and love comes flooding back to me. It is a film about the two most unlikely people who come together to form a life-changing bond full of brightness and warmth. Harold is a twenty year old man bored with his families wealth and high society but extremely interested in death and darkness until he meets Maude who is seventy-nine and only interested in the things in life that make you happy – smells, sights, flowers, singing, dancing, and so many more things that Harold never even knew existed. Together, they set a city plant free because it was dying in the harsh concrete and needed desperately to be in a forest. They play music together, have picnics together, and do so many other things that just make them happy. This film is amazing – everyone should be required to see it for prosperity sake!

High Fidelity:
Stars John Cusack, Jack Black, Todd Louiso, Iben Hjejle, Tim Robbins, Joan Cusack, Lisa Bonet and many more. It is directed by Stephen Frears who also directed The Grifters and My Beautiful Laundrette.
This is a film about a semi-failing record store owner who tries to evaluate the reason he is doomed to be left, doomed to be rejected. With the help of his two wacky employees, Barry (Jack Black) and Dick (Todd Louiso), Rob Gordon (John Cusack) tries to make sense of his relationships past that went wrong and what he may be able to do to save his recently doomed one to a girl that actually was worth something to him. It is really funny, quirky, and the music throughout just brings the whole thing together.

Say Anything:
Stars John Cusack, Ione Skye and John Mahoney, directed by Cameron Crowe who was the writer of Fast Times at Ridgemont High as well as the writer and director of the semi-autobiographical film Almost Famous.
This film is individual, charming, truthful and full of fun. To me, this is one of John Cusack’s most handsome performances and it is the one that made me fall in love with him. For most of my life I have been looking for a Lloyd Dobler – as all of the characters say, to know Lloyd is to love him.

The Thing Called Love:
Stars Samantha Mathis, River Phoenix, Dermot Mulroney and Sandra Bullock, directed by Peter Bogdanovich.
The film begins with the main character Miranda Presley (Samantha Mathis) taking a greyhound down to Nashville, TN to try to make her singer-songwriter career become a reality. Fresh from New York City, Miranda befriends three fellow hopefuls in the shy Connecticut cowboy Kyle Davidson (Dermot Mulroney), the Southern Belle Linda Lue Linden (Sandra Bullock), and most importantly, in James Wright (River Phoenix) who is the cocky Texan with brooding good looks and a honeyed voice. The film is about love, friendship and being truthful, not only by what you say and do, but by the music you sing.

The Outsiders:
Has an all-star cast with C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise and Diane Lane. It is directed by the genius of Francis Ford Coppola back in 1983 and it is based off of the stirring young adult novel by S. E. Hinton.
The movie takes place on the streets of Tulsa, OK in 1966 where all of the teenagers are split up into 2 categories: the “socs” who are rich and successful have it all, but the “greasers” are from the other side of the tracks who are the outsiders with only their true friends by their side. "Showing Some Skin" Is the theme of the week.
Inspired by the hot weather, movies featuring lightly clothed people (or the lack of clothing) are on special for 50 cents[3 day rental] starting Thursday (5-18-06) through Wednesday (5-24-06) Limit 2 please.

Here are a few examples but any movie which is not a new release and fits the theme on either DVD or VHS will be suitable for the 50 cent special of the week. Feel free to be adventurous, after all it's only 50 cents.

Wet Hot American Summer [comedy]
Set on the last day of camp, in the hot summer of 1981, "Wet Hot American Summer" follows a group of counselors who are each trying to complete their unfinished business before the day ends. The entire summer of pent-up sexual frustrations, unresolved post-traumatic stress, pending separations and of course, the talent show, all weigh heavily on the minds and groins of counselors and campers alike.

When Marie's maudlin boyfriend Paul refuses to engage in sexual relations, she is forced to search for intimacy beyond the bounds of traditional sexual limitations--a journey that proves to be both fulfilling and empowering.

Faster Pussycat Kill Kill [Killer B's]
Varla (Tura Satana), Billie (Lori Williams), and Rosie (Haji) are three fed-up go-go dancers who drive out into the California desert to let off some steam. When they encounter squeaky clean couple Tommy (Ray Barlow) and Linda (Sue Bernard), also out for a desert joyride, the girls’ invitation to drag race turns ugly. After a fistfight, Varla leaves Tommy for dead and kidnaps Linda. The three dangerous beauties then catch word of a feeble old man (Stuart Lancaster) out in the desert who is reportedly sitting on a large amount of money, and they set out to beat it out of him and his two sons.

The New Releases for Tuesday May 16 are:

THE PRODUCERS
This remake of Mel Brooks’ 1968 film features Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick in the roles that they originated in the smash Broadway adaptation of the original film. Broadway producer Max Bialystock (Lane) is famous for his spectacular opening night flops. Leopold Bloom (Broderick) is an uptight accountant who virtually discovers gold while reviewing Max’s books. When Leo realizes that you can actually make more money with a flop than with a hit, the two team up and begin a search for both the worst script and the worst director they can find to ensure failure. The script selection seems easy when the duo stumble upon SPRINGTIME FOR HITLER, an homage to the Fuhrer penned by Franz Liebkind (Will Ferrell), a German sympathetic to the Nazi cause. Convinced that the script will incite outrage, the duo needs a bad director to seal the deal. Campy director Roger DeBris (Gary Beach) and his assistant (Roger Bart) fit the bill perfectly.

But when their scheme fails, Max and Leo find themselves with the worst possible outcome: a hit. To make matters worse, Franz is just a little peeved that Hitler was depicted disrespectfully--and he has a gun. Will Max and Leo survive the playwright’s wrath? Will they go to jail for cooking the books? And will Leo ever submit to the advances of sexy Swedish receptionist/actress Ulla (Uma Thurman)? Directed by stage director Susan Stroman, making her feature film directorial debut, this riotous romp features lots of laughs from the major players, as well as brief appearances by Jon Lovitz, Michael McKean, and Richard Kind. Lane and Broderick make it easy to understand why the show was an unprecedented hit on Broadway, and Ferrell is a scene-stealer as Liebkind.

DANIEL DERONDA
The title character of this Masterpiece Theater presentation is the illegitimate son of a wealthy British aristocrat. With a secretive past and an unlimited supply of cash, he turns to gambling where he meets Gwendolyn, a beautiful woman in desperate need of money. From their meeting at a roulette table, a romance blossoms. Daniel, however, is already involved in a passionate relationship with a Jewish singer. Based on George Eliot's novel, this adaptation depicts a heartbreaking love triangle while examining class and wealth in British society.

DOOGAL
The origins of the characters in DOOGAL stretch back to 1964 and a TV program called THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT (or "Le Manège Enchanté" as its French creator Serge Danot called it). The show became a popular staple on British television, and this full-length movie is the first attempt to acquaint American audiences with Danot’s magical world.

Zeebad (voiced by THE DAILY Show’s Jon Stewart) is a recently escaped convict whose powers as a sorcerer are known throughout the land. While fleeing from prison, the embittered Zeebad decides to capture some mystical diamonds with the power to freeze the sun. Zeebad’s devious dream is to freeze the entire globe as an act of revenge on those who imprisoned him. But he doesn’t bank on the resilient forces of heroic canine Doogal (Daniel Tay) and his friends, a snail named Brian (William H. Macy), a hippie-ish rabbit called Dylan (Jimmy Fallon), and a loveable pink cow by the name of Ermintrude (Whoopi Goldberg). Together, they venture across the world in a desperate bid to find the ancient stones before the dastardly Zeebad gets his hands on them. Doogal and his friends scatter a few amusing references to popular culture into the plot as the story unfolds, and the animation is rendered in a style instantly familiar to fans of movies such as FINDING NEMO and HOODWINKED. Fans of the original television show who are looking for a fond, nostalgic experience won’t find much to remind them of Danot’s creation in DOOGAL, which is a fast-paced action romp aimed at a young audience. But for a new generation of fans this is a great way to get acquainted with a bunch of loveable characters who passed their 40th birthday on completion of the film.

DUMA
Set in the exotic country of South Africa, Duma tells the powerful adventure tale of an unbreakable bond of friendship between a cheetah named Duma and an intrepid young boy named Xan (Alexander Michaletos), who faces the true test of love when he must cross the whole of Southern Africa to return his best friend to his rightful home in the wilds. On his journey, Xan learns that everything always changes, but not love.

THE RINGER
The latest fearless comedy from producers The Farrelly Brothers (THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, DUMB & DUMBER, SHALLOW HAL) asks the question: can a comedy be outlandishly off-the-wall, irreverently indelicate and yet . . . inspirational? THE RINGER spikes the uproarious with the uplifting in a story about an ordinary man who discovers what it truly means to be special when he attempts to "fix" Special Olympics.

WHEN A STRANGER CALLS
A slick remake of the 1979 original, Simon West’s WHEN A STRANGER CALLS is a contemporary update of a well-known suburban legend. When 16-year-old Jill (newcomer Camilla Belle in the part originally played by Carol Kane) runs over her cell phone minutes, her parents force her to spend the night babysitting instead of attending a huge bonfire bash. As Jill’s father drives her to Dr. Mandrakis’s house for the evening, we are given the sense from the long drive, spooky music, and winding roads, that the home is literally at the ends of the Earth. Perched over the edge of a steamy lake, the mansion-like structure is made entirely of dark wood and glass. With an arboretum built into its center, the palatial home feels both Zen-like and forbidding. With the children already asleep, Jill spends the first hour indulging in secret babysitter pleasures like snooping about and trying on Mrs. Mandrakis’s jewelry. Without a cell phone or car, and all her friends' phones out of range, Jill is particularly isolated--the perfect victim for a psychopath on the loose. As she begins to get calls from a heavy-breathing stranger, what at first seems like a prank slowly becomes a real threat, creating a panic-filled evening that's any babysitter's nightmare. Using modern-day luxuries like caller ID, security alarm systems, and motion-sensor lights to its advantage, the film plays with themes of technology and wealth, pondering how much protection they actually provide. Clearly targeted at a teenage audience, the PG-13-rated film contains relatively little violence (lacking some of the graphic scenes that most people remember the original by), and instead uses unfamiliar spaces and a sense of the unknown to keep audiences scared.

WHITE COUNTESS
Set in Shanghai in the late 1930s, this is the story of the relationship between a disillusioned former US diplomat and a refugee White Russian countess reduced to a sordid life in the city's bars.
Todd Jackson (mid-40s), once an American diplomat filled with idealism, has lost his sight several years earlier, and is now languishing in Shanghai's grand hotels and elite gentlemen's clubs, a burnt-out case, He has become bitterly disillusioned by real politic and the seemingly unavoidable nature of war and conflict. He is, moreover, deeply bereaved by the deaths of his wife and children - victims of violent events in the political turmoil of 1930s China that also robbed him of his sight.

AND WHAT DO WE THINK?

Rather than just a list of titles for the coming month or so, I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce a couple of new sections at Crystal Video. First, fresh on the bare and saffron-scented heels of the 1st Annual Films of Compassion Buddhist Film Festival, we have a shelf showcasing selections from this kindest of all fests. Your rental of these films, and others like them, ensures that Films of Compassion will always have a home at Crystal Video.

Second, I’d like to invite you into the strange world of Ed Wood. Our man Marko is a big fan of the King of the B’s and has spent hours sorting through dusty boxes of videotapes and DVDs to compile this collection. Is it comprehensive? You’ll have to come in and debate that with Mark.

Another new development is the fact that we’ll be opening an hour later than we used to. Summer mornings are too good to rush, so we’ll see you at noon.

New films of special note:
“Tarnation” Wow! Imagine your life if you were abandoned by your crazy-ass mother, and were raised by your crazy-ass grandparents instead. Gravelly voiced Grandma: “I’ve got TB! That’s tobacco and beer! HAHAHAHA” What if when you were a 12-year-old boy you started posing as a petite Goth chick and going to all night raves? Now, what if you filmed the ENTIRE thing and edited it down to one psychedelic hour and a half? Well, you’d be Jonathan Caouette, of course. It took us a while to get a copy of this, so enjoy.
“Paradise Now” A fascinating and horrifying look at the road to martyrdom. Wasn’t it Wilhelm Reich who wrote about the sexual energies of young men being subverted for evil purpose? Maybe it was Walt Disney.
“Townes Van Zandt: Be Here to Love Me” Every Townes fan has probably already seen this, but if you’re like me, you’re a fan and didn’t even know it. This screened at this year’s Documentary Film Festival to cheering houses.

I’ll tell you, there’s a heck of a lot of other good stuff coming in as well, but for now you’ll have to come in and see for yourself.

The Price of Milk
Little shoes, cows, mystical old ladies and one of those hot men from Lord of the Rings, this is a love story that cannot be considered a chick flick by any means. It is fun and heart stirring in a very familiar way because almost all of us have been ridiculously in love. The story is fundamentally predictable from a human nature perspective but the bizarre Aussie humor makes you instinctively yell “what?” more frequently as the movie progresses. I learned a lot about life from this film, mostly from the unbelievable amount of shame experienced for having never bathed with my dirty dishes before.

Snatch
Okay, I know everyone has seen this movie but I would feel bad if I didn’t list it as one of my favorites. I am convinced that Guy Ritchie had divine inspiration in order to put this cast together and the layers upon layers of mishaps that make this wacky caper so freaking entertaining. The best piece of advice I can give anyone in Crystal World is turn on the subtitles when viewing Snatch. You will understand everything Mickey (Brad Pitt) has to say. And I am so glad that those sadistic Brits didn’t kill the cute, squeaky little dog.

East is East
Oh my god; this movie has it all when it comes to family dysfunction and turmoil.

Eulogy:
A dark comedy that brings together three generations for a funeral, and the fun starts there! Staring Hank Azaria, Zodey Deschanel, Famke Janssen, Kelly Preston, Ray Romano, Rip Torn, and Debra Winger proves to be hilarious look at a dysfunctional family. Available on both DVD and VHS.

Dead Men Don’t Ware Plaid:
This is one of my favorite movies of all time even though it didn’t get very good reviews when released. Done in black and white staring Steve Martin as Rigby Reardon, a tough, rough private detective who is out to solve a murder. One thing that makes this film a favorite of mine is the use of scenes from movies such as The Killers, The Bribe, Double Indemnity, and more to give it a real 1940’s feeling. Also starring Rachel Ward, Reni Santoni, Carl Reiner, with help from Humphrey Bogart, Charles Laughton, Burt Lancaster, and Barbara Stanwyck this has proven to be a must see on my list. It is also the last movie that Edith Head worked on, she was a costume designer who worked on many movies form the 1930’s through the 1980’s. Available only on VHS.

Out Foxed:
A must see documentary dealing with the issue of accurate and non-bias news. Out Foxed focuses on Fox news, the marketing of Fox News, Bill O’ Reilley, and Rupert Murdock’s war on journalism. It analyzes the differences between accurate news reporting and propaganda (or outright lying). A must see for anyone who gets their news from Fox news or any of their affiliates. Available on both DVD and VHS.

In the Heat of the Night:
Winner of 5 academy awards including best picture, In the Heat of the Night is not only a great film but very important for it’s day and age. Set in the Deep South in the early sixties it deals with racial tensions of the day. Sidney Poitier plays a homicide detective caught up in the wrong Mississippi town waiting for a train the night one of the towns most influential people is murdered. Rod Steiger plays a small town sheriff who is stuck trying to solve the murder. With Warren Oates, Lee Grant, and music by Ray Charles has stood the test of time. Available only on VHS.
